Using thematic analysis, we identify four main themes and discuss how this representation shifts with time, offering a brief overview of the broader context. I argue that there is a clear association between political developments and this western representation, for we can clearly observe changes from the romantic, exotic, and orientalist views of the region and Arab and Muslim figure shown within the realms of the Arabian Nights theme to a more militant figure and dangerous place due to featuring armed conflict in the Middle East such as the first Gulf War. Though not included in the discussion, 9\/11 introduced a more negative and Islamophobic representation that is associated with Islamist terrorism, and it marks the latest development in these themes.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/15554120241255425","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,20]],"date-time":"2024-05-20T06:54:33Z","timestamp":1716188073000},"page":"383-406","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["The Development of Video Game Representations of the Middle East"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"21","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7336-1550","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ahmed","family":"Al-Rawi","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Simon Fraser University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_4_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/1555412010377321"},{"key":"e_1_3_4_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3390\/laws10020029"},{"key":"e_1_3_4_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1386\/ijcis.2.2.225_1"},{"key":"e_1_3_4_5_1","first-page":"225","volume-title":"Video games and the global south","author":"Al-Rawi A.","year":"2019","unstructured":"Al-Rawi A., Consalvo M.
