In Studies 1a to 1c, we developed and validated the Leisure Guilt Proneness (LGP) Scale, which is internally consistent, stable over time, and predictive of poorer leisure experiences and lower well-being. In Study 2, we employed the experience sampling method to capture leisure guilt dynamics in everyday life. On average, people experienced leisure guilt during 14% of leisure occasions, with higher rates among women, individuals with lower socioeconomic status, and younger adults. Leisure type also mattered: leisure guilt was more common during solitary than social leisure. Lastly, individuals high in LGP reported experiencing reduced psychological benefits from leisure. Our findings identify leisure guilt as a potential barrier to the psychological benefits of leisure and daily well-being.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/01461672261462977","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,25]],"date-time":"2026-07-25T09:40:23Z","timestamp":1784972423000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Leisure Guilt"],"prefix":"10.1177","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1130-0992","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hyunjin J.","family":"Koo","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"California State University, San Marcos, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8719-7824","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Paul K.","family":"Piff","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California, Irvine, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8900-6844","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Friedrich M.","family":"G\u00f6tz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7784-6624","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stefan","family":"Stieger","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences, Krems an der Donau, Austria"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4444-460X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Azim F.","family":"Shariff","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,7,25]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_3_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Adler N.
