Long ago, Margaret Mead critiqued anthropologists for ignoring \u2018the world in between\u2019 that makes their fieldwork possible \u2013 this article takes the argument a step further, proposing that all ethnographic encounters are fundamentally \u2018amidst\u2019. Thus, it calls for a shift from translation to intermediation as the guiding trope of ethnography. Although the practice of ethnography requires the objectification of a \u2018field\u2019, metaphysical pluralism remains the fundamental condition of ethnographic intermediation. In light of that, the article critiques (a) the practice of describing our main methodological disposition as \u2018participant observation\u2019, arguing instead for the older term \u2018intensive ethnographic research\u2019; and (b) the implicit use of the trope of ethnography-as-translation.
