The technologically mediated environment prevents researchers from directly observing research participants and often makes the interaction anonymous. In addition, in the online environment direct interaction with participants is replaced by computer-screen data that are largely textual, but may include combinations of textual, visual, aural, and kinetic components. We show how the online environment requires adjustments in how ethnographers define the setting of their research, conduct participant observation and interviews, obtain access to settings and research subjects, and deal with the ethical dilemmas posed by the medium.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/0891241607310839","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2008,12,16]],"date-time":"2008-12-16T22:23:46Z","timestamp":1229466226000},"page":"52-84","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":299,"title":["Ethnographic Approaches to the Internet and Computer-Mediated Communication"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"38","author":[{"given":"Angela Cora","family":"Garcia","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Bentley College"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Alecea I.","family":"Standlee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Syracuse University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jennifer","family":"Bechkoff","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"San Jose State University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"family":"Yan Cui","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Cincinnati"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,2]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1475-682X.1996.tb00213.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","first-page":"193","volume-title":"The Webcam subculture and the digital enclosureMediaspace: Place, scale and culture in a media age","author":"Andrejevic, M.","year":"2004","unstructured":"Andrejevic, M. 2004.
