Guided by Family Systems Theory, the study situates MPA within the context of family cohesion, adaptability, communication and conflict. Adopting an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the study integrated quantitative data from 2,660 participants with qualitative interviews of 40 purposively selected individuals. Key Family Systems Theory concepts, including differentiation of self, emotional triangulation, subsystem boundaries and intergenerational transmission, guided the interpretation of findings. Data were collected using an adapted Smartphone Addiction Scale and subscales from Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale IV and analysed through descriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical regression and thematic analysis. Findings revealed higher MPA among adolescents and urban residents, strong negative associations with cohesion and communication, and positive associations with conflict, while adaptability remained stable. These patterns were interpreted through systemic and relational processes within Ghanaian family structures. The study concludes that MPA functions as a systemic disruption to family relational regulation and recommends contextually grounded interventions targeting communication, shared routines and intergenerational relational repair.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/10664807261483691","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,9,2]],"date-time":"2026-09-02T01:40:55Z","timestamp":1788313255000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Mobile Phone Addiction and Family Interactions in Ghana: A Family Systems Approach"],"prefix":"10.1177","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9801-0917","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Patricia Mawusi","family":"Amos","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-1562-2783","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Patience Farkor","family":"Kpeyibor","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Education, Mount Mary College of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Isaac Asante","family":"Gyan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"St. Ann's Girls Senior High School, Sefwi Bekwai, Ghana"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-6343-2644","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Godsway Kormla","family":"Agbenyegah","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Educational Studies, Dambai College of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9618-5326","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Theresa","family":"Antwi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8157-4027","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Kwesi Nkum","family":"Wilson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Komenda College of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-3112-8774","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Samuel Ofori","family":"Danquah","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Education"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,9,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.wdp.2021.100317"},{"key":"e_1_3_2_3_1","volume-title":"The ethics of research with children and young people","author":"Alderson P.","year":"2020","unstructured":"Alderson P., Morrow V.
