For five years we followed the leadership team of a large Australian Alliance Program made up of a large public and several private organizations, analyzing `practice' as novel patterns of interaction developed into predictable arrays of activities, changing and transforming while at the same time continuing to be referred to as `the same'. In this article we focus on three such arrays of activities: authoring boundaries, negotiating competencies and adapting materiality. We suggest that these are essential mechanisms in becoming a practice. While most studies of practice deal with already established practices, the significance of our research is that we develop a notion of practice as it unfolds. In this way we can provide a better account of the constant change inherent in practices.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1177\/1350507608101226","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,3,17]],"date-time":"2009-03-17T12:19:31Z","timestamp":1237292371000},"page":"145-159","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":80,"title":["Becoming (a) Practice"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"40","author":[{"given":"Kjersti","family":"Bj\u00f8rkeng","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Technology, Sydney, Australia,"}]},{"given":"Stewart","family":"Clegg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Technology, Sydney, Australia,"}]},{"given":"Tyrone","family":"Pitsis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Technology, Sydney, Australia"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,4,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","volume-title":"For Marx","author":"Althusser, L.","year":"1969"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/2093510"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"The Organization of Hypocrisy: Talk, Decisions and Actions in Organizations","author":"Brunsson, N.","year":"2002"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/orsc.1050.0176"},{"key":"atypb5","volume-title":"Power, Rule and Domination","author":"Clegg, S.R.","year":"1975"},{"key":"atypb6","volume-title":"Managing and Organizations","author":"Clegg, S.R.","year":"2008","edition":"2"},{"key":"atypb7","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1177\/0170840602233001"},{"key":"atypb8","unstructured":"DiMaggio, P.
