{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,12]],"date-time":"2026-05-12T15:36:38Z","timestamp":1778600198527,"version":"3.51.4"},"reference-count":27,"publisher":"Wiley","issue":"1","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2021,2,11]],"date-time":"2021-02-11T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1613001600000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":10,"URL":"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-nd\/4.0\/"},{"start":{"date-parts":[[2021,2,1]],"date-time":"2021-02-01T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1612137600000},"content-version":"tdm","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/page\/policies\/text-and-data-mining-license"}],"content-domain":{"domain":["journals.sagepub.com"],"crossmark-restriction":true},"short-container-title":["UEG Journal"],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2021,2]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:sec><jats:title>Background<\/jats:title><jats:p>There has been resurgence in the use of bismuth quadruple therapy (proton pump inhibitor, bismuth, tetracycline and metronidazole) for treating <jats:italic>Helicobacter pylori<\/jats:italic> infection thanks to a three\u2010in\u2010one single\u2010capsule formulation.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Objective<\/jats:title><jats:p>To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the single\u2010capsule bismuth quadruple therapy.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title><jats:p>Data were collected in a multicentre, prospective registry of the clinical practice of gastroenterologists on the management of <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic> infection, where patients were registered at the Asociaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola de Gastroenterologia REDCap database on an electronic case report form until January 2020. Effectiveness by modified intention\u2010to\u2010treat and per\u2010protocol as well as multivariable analysis were performed. Independent factors evaluated were: age, gender, indication, compliance, proton pump inhibitor dose and treatment line.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Results<\/jats:title><jats:p>Finally, 2100 patients were prescribed single\u2010capsule bismuth quadruple therapy following the technical sheet (i.e., three capsules every 6 h for 10 days). The majority of these patients were naive (64%), with an average age of 50 years, 64% women and 16% with peptic ulcer. An overall modified intention\u2010to\u2010treat effectiveness of 92% was achieved. Eradication was over 90% in first\u2010line treatment (95% modified intention\u2010to\u2010treat, <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 1166), and this was maintained as a rescue therapy, both in second (89% modified intention\u2010to\u2010treat, <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 375) and subsequent lines of therapy (third to sixth line: 92% modified intention\u2010to\u2010treat, <jats:italic>n<\/jats:italic> = 236). Compliance was the factor most closely associated with treatment effectiveness. Adverse events were generally mild to moderate, and 3% of patients reported a severe adverse event, leading to discontinuation of treatment in 1.7% of cases.<\/jats:p><\/jats:sec><jats:sec><jats:title>Conclusions<\/jats:title><jats:p>Single\u2010capsule bismuth quadruple therapy achieved <jats:italic>H. pylori<\/jats:italic> eradication in approximately 90% of patients in real\u2010world clinical practice, both as a first\u2010line and rescue treatment, with good compliance and a favourable safety
