This article discusses an underwater acoustic characteristics analysis method based on self-similarity. It is found that acoustic signal has good self-similarity in shallow water. The actual towed hydrophone linear array was established and it was used for underwater acoustic signal acquisition experiment in Qilihai Reservoir which is located in the suburb of Tianjin, China. It can be derived that the signals acquired by hydrophones have self-similarity by the analysis of the variance of m<\/jats:italic>-aggregated time series. It is proved that the characteristics of self-similarity can be used for the sound pulse propagation in shallow water.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1186\/1687-1499-2013-91","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,3,28]],"date-time":"2013-03-28T11:14:48Z","timestamp":1364469288000},"update-policy":"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1007\/springer_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Self-similarity property of acoustic data acquired in shallow water environment"],"prefix":"10.1186","volume":"2013","author":[{"given":"Jin","family":"Chen","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Fa-jie","family":"Duan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jia-jia","family":"Jiang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Baoju","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Ying","family":"Tong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jun","family":"He","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"297","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,3,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"620_CR1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"660","DOI":"10.1126\/science.1121756","volume":"311","author":"MC Nicholas","year":"2006","unstructured":"Nicholas MC, Purnima R, Deanelle ST, Srinivasan J, Lee S, Redwood NW: Fish population and behavior revealed by instantaneous continental shelf-scale imaging.
