Nonetheless, information on FVBD agents and their prevalence in Portugal is scarce.<\/jats:p>\n          <\/jats:sec>\n          <jats:sec>\n            <jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title>\n            <jats:p>Three-hundred and twenty domestic cats presented to 30 veterinary medical centres in the north and centre regions of Portugal were randomly sampled. Blood was assayed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for genera <jats:italic>Anaplasma<\/jats:italic>\/<jats:italic>Ehrlichia<\/jats:italic>, genus <jats:italic>Babesia<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Hepatozoon canis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Hepatozoon felis<\/jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Leishmania infantum<\/jats:italic> and the genus <jats:italic>Rickettsia<\/jats:italic>. <jats:italic>Babesia<\/jats:italic>-positive samples were further tested for <jats:italic>Babesia canis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Babesia vogeli<\/jats:italic>.<\/jats:p>\n          <\/jats:sec>\n          <jats:sec>\n            <jats:title>Results<\/jats:title>\n            <jats:p>Eighty (25.0%) out of the 320 cats were positive to at least one vector-borne agent, including seven (2.2%) cats co-infected with two agents. Two cats (0.6%) were infected with <jats:italic>Anaplasma<\/jats:italic>\/<jats:italic>Ehrlichia<\/jats:italic> spp., four (1.3%) with <jats:italic>B. canis<\/jats:italic>, 26 (8.1%) with <jats:italic>B. vogeli<\/jats:italic>, 50 (15.6%) with <jats:italic>H. felis<\/jats:italic>, one (0.3%) with <jats:italic>L. infantum<\/jats:italic> and four (1.3%) with <jats:italic>Rickettsia<\/jats:italic> spp. No cat tested positive for <jats:italic>H.<\/jats:italic> canis. One cat (0.3%) was co-infected with <jats:italic>B. canis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>B. vogeli<\/jats:italic>, three (0.9%) with <jats:italic>B. vogeli<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>H. felis<\/jats:italic>, one (0.3%) with <jats:italic>H. felis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>L. infantum<\/jats:italic>, and two (0.6%) with <jats:italic>H. felis<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Rickettsia<\/jats:italic> spp.<\/jats:p>\n          <\/jats:sec>\n          <jats:sec>\n            <jats:title>Conclusions<\/jats:title>\n            <jats:p>A considerable prevalence of infection with vector-borne pathogens among the domestic feline population of the north and centre of Portugal has been revealed by the present study.
