Self-ratings of empathy change across the years of medical education only when the Jefferson Scale of Physicians Empathy is used, with a worrying decrease being found throughout the years in Medicine Schools. As there are only few studies on the factors influencing medical student\u2019s empathy, particularly of the curricular model, this study aimed to compare the levels of empathy of medicine students of two Schools with different curricular models in central Portugal, the Faculty of Medicine - University of Coimbra (FMUC) and the Faculty of Health Sciences - University of Beira Interior (FCS-UBI).<\/jats:p>\n                  <\/jats:sec>\n                  <jats:sec>\n                    <jats:title>Methods<\/jats:title>\n                    <jats:p>\n                      Cross-sectional observational study with the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy \u2013 students\u2019 Portuguese version (JSPE \u2013 spv) to 1st, 3rd and 6th year students of the 2017\/2018 academic year with descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009&lt;\u20090.05).\n                    <\/jats:p>\n                  <\/jats:sec>\n                  <jats:sec>\n                    <jats:title>Results<\/jats:title>\n                    <jats:p>\n                      Size representative sample of 795 students. Higher total empathy score (TES) (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.008) and \u201cPerspective taking\u201d (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.001) in FCS-UBI were found. JSPE-TES was higher in FCS-UBI, 3rd year (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.038). Higher FCS-UBI \u201cPerspective taking\u201d in the 1st year (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.030) and 6th year (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.044), for \u201cCompassionate care\u201d in the 3rd (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.019) and for \u201cStanding in the patient\u2019s shoes\u201d in the 1st year (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.018) and in FMUC for \u201cCompassionate care\u201d in the 1st year (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.037) and the \u201cStanding in the patient\u2019s shoes\u201d in year 3 (\n                      <jats:italic>p<\/jats:italic>\n                      \u2009=\u20090.002) were found.
