The black color of the rhyolite is imparted by tiny needles of magnetite which may approximate single-domain grains. The direction of remanent polarization in the rhyolite is S. 30 degrees W., inclined 35 degrees , and the remanent component is approximately 40 times greater than the natural susceptibility magnetization. A total intensity curve calculated on the assumption that the black rhyolite body is an inclined dike of limited depth extent is a good fit to the observed anomaly. Irregularities in thesurface magnetic properties were probably caused by lightning and were acquired after the thermoremanent magnetization.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1190\/1.1439957","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,10,11]],"date-time":"2002-10-11T15:32:08Z","timestamp":1034350328000},"page":"613-620","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Remanent magnetism and the anomaly at Cottoner Mountain, Madison County, Missouri"],"prefix":"10.1190","volume":"33","author":[{"given":"Frederick B.","family":"Park","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"186","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1968,8,1]]},"container-title":["Geophysics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/seg\/geophysics\/article-pdf\/33\/4\/613\/3154580\/613.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"syndication"},{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/seg\/geophysics\/article-pdf\/33\/4\/613\/3154580\/613.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,10]],"date-time":"2025-12-10T17:03:08Z","timestamp":1765386188000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/geophysics\/article\/33\/4\/613\/71013\/Remanent-magnetism-and-the-anomaly-at-Cottoner"},"secondary":[{"URL":"http:\/\/geophysics.geoscienceworld.org\/cgi\/doi\/10.1190\/1.1439957","label":"geoscienceworld"}]},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1968,8,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"4","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1968,8,1]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1190\/1.1439957","relation":{},"ISSN":["1942-2156","0016-8033"],"issn-type":[{"type":"electronic","value":"1942-2156"},{"type":"print","value":"0016-8033"}],"subject":[],"published-other":{"date-parts":[[1968,8,1]]},"published":{"date-parts":[[1968,8,1]]}}}
