The one-dimensional spline fit has well defined smoothness properties. These are duplicated for two-dimensional interpolation in this paper, by solving the corresponding differential equation. Finite difference equations are deduced from a principle of minimum total curvature, and an iterative method of solution is outlined. Observations do not have to lie on a regular grid. Gravity and aeromagnetic surveys provide examples which compare favorably with the work of draftsmen.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1190\/1.1440410","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2002,10,11]],"date-time":"2002-10-11T15:35:06Z","timestamp":1034350506000},"page":"39-48","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":763,"title":["Machine contouring using minimum curvature"],"prefix":"10.1190","volume":"39","author":[{"given":"Ian C.","family":"Briggs","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"186","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1974,2,1]]},"container-title":["Geophysics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/seg\/geophysics\/article-pdf\/39\/1\/39\/3156104\/39.pdf","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"syndication"},{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/seg\/geophysics\/article-pdf\/39\/1\/39\/3156104\/39.pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,10]],"date-time":"2025-12-10T15:48:14Z","timestamp":1765381694000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/geophysics\/article\/39\/1\/39\/67729\/Machine-contouring-using-minimum-curvature"},"secondary":[{"URL":"http:\/\/geophysics.geoscienceworld.org\/cgi\/doi\/10.1190\/1.1440410","label":"geoscienceworld"}]},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1974,2,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1974,2,1]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1190\/1.1440410","relation":{},"ISSN":["1942-2156","0016-8033"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1942-2156","type":"electronic"},{"value":"0016-8033","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published-other":{"date-parts":[[1974,2,1]]},"published":{"date-parts":[[1974,2,1]]}}}
