This study was conducted with a method that combines these approaches. Pairs of participants played video games requiring communication. Members of a pair were physically separated but exchanged graphic signals through a medium that prevented the use of standard symbols (e.g., letters). Communication systems emerged and developed rapidly during the games, integrating the use of explicit signs with information implicitly available to players and silent behavior\u2010coordinating procedures. The systems that emerged suggest 3 conclusions: (a) signs originate from different mappings; (b) sign systems develop parsimoniously; (c) sign forms are perceptually distinct, easy to produce, and tolerant to variations.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1207\/s15516709cog0000_34","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,9,22]],"date-time":"2005-09-22T13:55:43Z","timestamp":1127397343000},"page":"737-767","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":212,"title":["An Experimental Study of the Emergence of Human Communication Systems"],"prefix":"10.1111","volume":"29","author":[{"given":"Bruno","family":"Galantucci","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Roots of language.","author":"Bickerton D.","year":"1981"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"245","DOI":"10.1353\/lan.2000.0015","article-title":"Grammatical acquisition: Inductive bias and coevolution of language and the language acquisition device","volume":"76","author":"Briscoe T.","year":"2000","journal-title":"Language"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","volume-title":"Simulating the evolution of language.","author":"Cangelosi A.","year":"2001"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","first-page":"45","volume-title":"Using artificial language learning to study language evolution: Exploring the emergence of word order universals","author":"Christiansen M.
