This will expresses itself in the national cleanliness campaign launched in 2014 where those seen as flouting protocols of cleanliness face all kinds of coercion and punishment, even if no law has been broken. Situating this national cleanliness campaign in the larger political climate of contemporary India, this chapter addresses the rise of vigilante violence in India\u2014which has captured the cleanliness campaign as well\u2014and how it is being repositioned as a patriotic or national duty.
