Moving from a study of the casual or even tolerable repercussions of empire, like cultural appropriation or racial renovation, Torn now turns toward exploring the more overt yet still ordinary violences of the imperial past and present: Asian emasculation, sexual predation, misogyny, and racial fetishization. Sex and violence are major themes in the next two chapters, but as in intimate theaters, desire is only the beginning of the
