The author focuses on the figurations of domestic workers in literature, film, and dance, within cities that are routinely cast as sexually open or liberated: Hong Kong, Bahrain, Honolulu, and Las Vegas. As global transit nodes, these cities are racial mixtures of all of the above, where the brown domestic worker is not seen in isolation or in constant comparison to whiteness but as one of many shades of brown.
[[2026,2,25
["Migrant Domestic Workers in the Global City
Abbasi, Jennifer. “Is Trypophobia a Real Phobia?” Popular Science, July25, 2011. http://www.popsci.com/trypophobia/.
AFP. “Filipino Migrant Mothers in Hong Kong Sing for Their Distant Children.” Coconuts, October1, 2017. https://coconuts.co/manila/features/filipino-migrant-mothers-hong-kong-sing-distantchildren/.
2026022512145888500_ch6_nopart_016_bibliography.r6
My Perceptions of the Plantation Experience: Influences That Shaped My Views on the Americanization Process
Aguilar, Filomeno V., Jr. “Tracing Origins: ‘Ilustrado’ Nationalism and the Racial Science of Migration Waves.” Journal of Asian Studies64, no. 3 (2005): 605–37. https://www.jstor.org/stable/25075827.
Alegado, Dean. “Blood in the Fields: The Hanapepe Massacre and the 1924 Filipino Strike.” Positively Filipino, November26, 2012. https://www.positivelyfilipino.com/magazine/2012/11/26/blood-in-the-fields-the-hanapepe-massacre-and-the-1942-filipino-strike.
Ancestry.com.
