It follows the activities of Puto, an art photographer and underground counterfeiter, as he assists members of a communist cell and looks for his missing boyfriend and laptop. In this dystopia, the US-Mexico border has been closed and immigrants and felons are barred from access to US citizenship and dollars. Los Angeles is carved up by internal borders and Homeland Security agents police mobility according to citizenship status. Through its dystopian realism, Puto addresses how US elites\u2019 class warfare has historically relied on racist forms of social control and repression, both within and beyond its national borders. The play closes looking toward a future with armed struggle against the US state on the horizon.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1215\/9781478061670-008","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,3]],"date-time":"2026-02-03T23:50:41Z","timestamp":1770162641000},"page":"139-179","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Puto"],"prefix":"10.1215","member":"73","reference":[{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.1017\/9789048503650","volume-title":"Why Are Artists Poor?","author":"Abbing","year":"2008"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r2","volume-title":"In Theory: Classes, Nations, Literatures","author":"Ahmad","year":"2000"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r3","volume-title":"On the Reproduction of Capitalism: Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses","author":"Althusser","year":"2014"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r4","volume-title":"Fan the Flames: A Revolutionary Position on the Chicano National Question","author":"August 29th Movement","year":"1974"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r5","volume-title":"A Lover's Discourse: Fragments","author":"Barthes","year":"1978"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r6","volume-title":"Mythologies","author":"Barthes","year":"1972"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r7","volume-title":"Selected Writings","author":"Benjamin","year":"1999"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r8","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","DOI":"10.7208\/chicago\/9780226043449.001.0001","article-title":"Is the Rectum a Grave?","volume-title":"Is the Rectum a Grave and Other Essays","author":"Bersani","year":"2009"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r9","volume-title":"Mexico Profundo: Reclaiming a Civilization","author":"Batalla","year":"1996"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r10","article-title":"Anger and Love","author":"Bracho","year":"2014"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r11","article-title":"It Is the Libido.","author":"Bracho","year":"2008"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r12","article-title":"A Proclamation on, of, and by Negation","author":"Bracho","year":"2014"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r13","author":"Bracho","year":"2015"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r14","author":"Bracho","year":"2020"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r15","article-title":"Towards Translocalism: Latino Theatre in the New United States.","volume-title":"Trans-Global Readings: Crossing Theatrical Boundaries","author":"Bracho","year":"2004"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r16","volume-title":"Brecht on Theater: The Development of an Aesthetic","author":"Brecht","year":"1964"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r17","volume-title":"Fear and Misery of the Third Reich","author":"Brecht","year":"2015"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r18","article-title":"Letter to Mr. X, 2 June 1927.","volume-title":"Brecht on Theater: The Development of an Aesthetic","author":"Brecht","year":"1992"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r19","volume-title":"The Messingkauf Dialogues","author":"Brecht","year":"2012"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r20","volume-title":"Parable of the Sower","author":"Butler","year":"2000"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r21","volume-title":"The True History of the Conquest of New Spain","author":"Castillo","year":"2010"},{"key":"2026020318503594800_ch7_nopart_012_bibliography.r22","volume-title":"The Twilight of Equality?
