They grew up on a farm in Washington, North Carolina, in its Keysville section, where free Black farmers owned farmland before the Civil War. Sarah learned from her father’s stories that those Black farmers let escapees from slavery hide in caves on their land. The chapter shows what life was like for free Black people, who in 1860 comprised 13 percent of the population in Sarah’s hometown, a larger share than the 3 percent in the state overall. During the Civil War, her hometown was occupied by Union troops, serving as a recruiting center for Black Union soldiers (including some named Keys or Keyes). Its Catholic church and other buildings were destroyed when Union troops retreated in 1864. Sarah’s father would help the town regain a Catholic church many years later.
[[2026,1,20
["“The Quietest of Us All”
Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern Railroad Company vs. Ida B.
