This article summarises relevant findings from interdisciplinary research on nostalgia for the sociology of emotions and discusses them in the light of selected concepts from this field. The concepts of ‘feeling rules’ and ‘emotion management’ by Arlie Hochschild, the ‘shame–anger spiral’ by Thomas Scheff and ‘emotional energy’ by Randall Collins are examined in more detail in this context. It is argued that the use of nostalgia as a label for a wide variety of practices and attitudes does not contribute to a better understanding of them. Rather, focusing on nostalgia as an emotion adds to conceptual clarity and enables the systematic analysis of the social embedding of this emotion. The aim is to highlight nostalgia as an interesting topic for the sociology of emotions and to emphasise the usefulness of concepts from the sociology of emotions for nostalgia research. Using nostalgia for the German Democratic Republic and the associated discourse as an example, it is demonstrated how populist rhetoric can attempt to fuel a shame–anger spiral by attacking dominant feeling rules in a society.
