Netw."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2023,8,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>The rapid increases in data traffic coupled with user preferences are\n\t\t\t\t\tdriving the data center and computing system service providers to\n\t\t\t\t\toffer energy-efficient, intelligent, flexible, cost-effective,\n\t\t\t\t\thigh-capacity, and low-latency data services without added complexity\n\t\t\t\t\tto the users. Disaggregated heterogeneous reconfigurable computing\n\t\t\t\t\tsystems realized by photonic switching and interconnects can enhance\n\t\t\t\t\tthroughput and energy efficiency for artificial intelligence\/machine\n\t\t\t\t\tlearning (AI\/ML) workloads, especially when aided by the\n\t\t\t\t\tAI\/ML-enhanced control plane. Photonic switching and new optical\n\t\t\t\t\tnetworking architectures are expected to solve many of these\n\t\t\t\t\tchallenging problems. This paper discusses new trends in photonic\n\t\t\t\t\tswitching and optical network architectures for future data centers\n\t\t\t\t\tand computing systems summarized as follows: (1)\u00a0flat\n\t\t\t\t\treconfigurable disaggregated computing enabled by high-radix photonic\n\t\t\t\t\tswitching and interconnects in data centers; (2)\u00a0chiplet-based\n\t\t\t\t\tcomputing architectures empowered by embedded photonics toward\n\t\t\t\t\theterogeneous reconfigurable computing; (3)\u00a0nanosecond-scale\n\t\t\t\t\tphotonic switching in data centers and computing systems;\n\t\t\t\t\t(4)\u00a0AI\/ML in self-driving, application-aware, and\n\t\t\t\t\tsituation-aware data centers; (5)\u00a0the emergence of flexible\n\t\t\t\t\tnetworking for cloud computing, edge computing, and split computing,\n\t\t\t\t\tas well as flexible networking for 5G\/6G RF-optical networks; and\n\t\t\t\t\t(6)\u00a0the deployment of embedded co-designed silicon photonics\n\t\t\t\t\tbeing considered for future data centers.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1364\/jocn.484577","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,7,17]],"date-time":"2023-07-17T11:00:14Z","timestamp":1689591614000},"page":"C288","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1364\/crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":33,"title":["New trends in photonic switching and optical networking architectures for data centers and computing systems [Invited]"],"prefix":"10.1364","volume":"15","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7420-1871","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"S.
