However, within these parameters, there is a lot of room for lab members to contribute to a happy and productive environment. Often doctoral students or postdocs (or other staff) may underestimate how much of a difference they can really make. Here are 10 simple rules on how to help make a lab a better place; these rules are mostly aimed at building better lab communities, where people help each other, look out for each other, and take an interest in critically questioning the status quo.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1371\/journal.pcbi.1010673","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,12,1]],"date-time":"2022-12-01T18:38:54Z","timestamp":1669919934000},"page":"e1010673","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pcbi.corrections_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Ten simple rules for how you can help make your lab a better place as a graduate student or postdoc"],"prefix":"10.1371","volume":"18","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3541-7853","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Matthias C.","family":"Rillig","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]}],"member":"340","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,12,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"pcbi.1010673.ref001","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"e1006914","DOI":"10.1371\/journal.pcbi.1006914","article-title":"Ten simple rules towards healthier research labs","volume":"15","author":"FT Maestre","year":"2019","journal-title":"PLoS Comput Biol"},{"key":"pcbi.1010673.ref002","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"e1008313","DOI":"10.1371\/journal.pcbi.1008313","article-title":"Ten simple rules for increased lab resilience","volume":"16","author":"MC Rillig","year":"2020","journal-title":"PLoS Comput Biol"},{"key":"pcbi.1010673.ref003","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"31","DOI":"10.1890\/130001","article-title":"Creating and maintaining high-performing collaborative research teams: the importance of diversity and interpersonal skills","volume":"12","author":"KS Cheruvelil","year":"2014","journal-title":"Front Ecol Environ"},{"volume-title":"Collaboration and Team Science: A Field Guide","year":"2010","author":"L Bennett","key":"pcbi.1010673.ref004"},{"key":"pcbi.1010673.ref005","article-title":"Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.
