{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,14]],"date-time":"2025-05-14T04:22:33Z","timestamp":1747196553936,"version":"3.40.5"},"reference-count":17,"publisher":"Intellect","issue":"1","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,1]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>In this article, I reflect on the way in which the memory of the disappearance of embroidery \u2013 as a manufacturing activity and, as a consequence, as the genus of social fabric and socio-economic relations \u2013 fosters the construction of a local identity and feeds the creation of a new symbolic language. I analyse how the division between the \u2018traditional\u2019 and the \u2018contemporary\u2019 is the result of a western culture that creates a sharp divide in time wherein everything that precedes it is in the past, and therefore fixed. Following this line of thought, craftsmanship has been associated with the traditional (i.e. unchanging), and art or design with the contemporary. By mapping the evolution of the Madeiran embroidery imaginary, I argue that this division is a historical construct.
