Young people are often portrayed as disengaged, and there is a prevailing notion that they are disengaged from political life. However, the 21st century has introduced new forms of participation, new communication channels, as well as new concerns and challenges regarding collective decision-making. This study aims to explore how young people in Portugal engage politically and the role social media plays in these processes. Methodology. A qualitative approach was adopted, with data collected through 18 focus group sessions involving young people aged 15 to 29. The study population was divided into three phases of youth: adolescents (15 to 19 years), emerging adults (20 to 24 years), and young adults (25 to 29 years), to analyze political engagement across different stages of youth. Results and Conclusions. The results reveal a generally negative perception of politics and a disconnection between young people and political parties. Family political socialization is crucial to the relationship young people establish with political participation. We can identify a gap between young people who follow the news and show some interest in current political affairs, while others openly state their disinterest and disconnected from political issues and participation. The primary forms of mobilization, apart from electoral activities, identified by participants are discussions with family and friends, and, above all, sharing content on social media which raises the debate of a passive wave of participation by the younger generation. Singularities. This article introduces the concept of Re-share-politics to highlight a passive form of youth political participation in Portugal that deserves our attention.\n\u00a0<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.14198\/medcom.30307","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,7]],"date-time":"2026-01-07T09:57:07Z","timestamp":1767779827000},"page":"e30307","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Is Sharing Participating?
