With Oracle Database 12.2, Database In-Memory is further enhanced to accelerate analytic processing through a novel lightweight mechanism known as\n Dynamic In-Memory Expressions<\/jats:italic>\n (DIMEs). The DIME mechanism automatically detects frequently occurring expressions in a query workload, and then creates highly optimized, transactionally consistent, in-memory columnar representations of these expression results. At runtime, queries can directly access these DIMEs, thus avoiding costly expression evaluations. Furthermore, all the optimizations introduced in DBIM can apply directly to DIMEs. Since DIMEs are purely in-memory structures, no changes are required to the underlying tables. We show that DIMEs can reduce query elapsed times by several orders of magnitude without the need for costly pre-computed structures such as computed columns or materialized views or cubes.\n <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.14778\/3007263.3007280","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,11,1]],"date-time":"2016-11-01T13:47:47Z","timestamp":1478008067000},"page":"1437-1448","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Accelerating analytics with dynamic in-memory expressions"],"prefix":"10.14778","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Aurosish","family":"Mishra","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Shasank","family":"Chavan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Allison","family":"Holloway","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Tirthankar","family":"Lahiri","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Zhen Hua","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Sunil","family":"Chakkappen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Dennis","family":"Lui","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Vinita","family":"Subramanian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Ramesh","family":"Kumar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Maria","family":"Colgan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jesse","family":"Kamp","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Niloy","family":"Mukherjee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Vineet","family":"Marwah","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oracle America"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1142473.1142527"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"C-Store: A Column-oriented DBMS.
