As\nengineers, the authors are concerned that this drift weakens the position of\nprocess control as a\u00a0whole. Hence, a\u00a0thorough analysis and a\u00a0following\ndiscussion are at need. In order to contribute to the aforementioned\ndialogue, first the state of the art of process control in the Western\nEuropean chemical industry is reported by displaying the results of\na\u00a0Western-European-wide survey. Thereafter, a\u00a0discussion of the actual context\nof industrial applications of process control is led.
