Bruxism is a risk factor for temporomandibular disorders. A gold standard is still lacking for assessing bruxism while awake, whereas for sleep bruxism, polysomnography with audio and video recording is the gold standard. Wearable devices, particularly those that detect sound (hearables), are cost-effective and convenient and could fill the gap. With this systematic literature review of Livivo and PubMed, extended by individual Google Scholar searches, we aimed to assess the potential of wearable devices that use sound as a biomarker for detecting bruxism. In summary, sounds originating from oral behaviors can be recorded from the ear, and hearables have the potential to detect bruxism-like events.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1515\/auto-2024-0029","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,7]],"date-time":"2024-05-07T09:13:32Z","timestamp":1715073212000},"page":"389-398","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Reviewing the potential of hearables for the assessment of bruxism"],"prefix":"10.1515","volume":"72","author":[{"given":"Mohammad Khair","family":"Nahhas","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"BIROMED-Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering , University of Basel , Hegenheimermattweg 167c, 4123 Allschwil , Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Nicolas","family":"Gerig","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"BIROMED-Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering , University of Basel , Hegenheimermattweg 167c, 4123 Allschwil , Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Philippe","family":"Cattin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CIAN, Department of Biomedical Engineering , University of Basel , Hegenheimermattweg 167c, 4123 Allschwil , Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Elisabeth","family":"Wilhelm","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen, Faculty of Science and Engineering , University of Groningen , Groningen , The Netherlands"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Jens Christoph","family":"T\u00fcrp","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Oral Health & Medicine , University Center for Dental Medicine Basel (UZB), University of Basel , Mattenstrasse 40, 4058 Basel , Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Georg","family":"Rauter","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"BIROMED-Lab, Department of Biomedical Engineering , University of Basel , Hegenheimermattweg 167c, 4123 Allschwil , Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"374","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,7]]},"reference":[{"key":"2025022009450625025_j_auto-2024-0029_ref_001","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"F.
