We derive several conservation properties of the method and a suitable energy estimate for numerical solutions.\nUnder certain assumptions on the smoothness of the free surface and its evolution, this leads to a stability result for the numerical method. Efficient computations of free surface flows of incompressible viscous fluids need several other ingredients, such as dynamically adapted meshes, surface reconstruction and level set function re-initialization.\nThese enabling techniques are discussed in the paper as well. The properties of the method are illustrated with a few numerical examples. These examples include analytical tests and the oscillating droplet benchmark problem.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,26]],"date-time":"2014-09-26T12:13:00Z","timestamp":1411733580000},"page":"59-77","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["A Splitting Method for Numerical Simulation of Free Surface Flows of Incompressible Fluids with Surface Tension"],"prefix":"10.1515","volume":"15","author":[{"given":"Kirill D.","family":"Nikitin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Numerical Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Gubkin str. 8, 119333 Moscow, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Maxim A.","family":"Olshanskii","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematics, University of Houston, 641 PGH Building, Houston, TX 77204-3008, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Kirill M.","family":"Terekhov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Energy Resources Engineering, Stanford University, 367 Panama Street, Stanford, CA 94305-2220, USA; and Institute of Numerical Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yuri V.","family":"Vassilevski","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Numerical Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Gubkin str. 8, 119333 Moscow; and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Institutskii Lane 9, 141700, Dolgoprudny, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"374","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,26]]},"container-title":["Computational Methods in Applied Mathematics"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/view\/journals\/cmam\/15\/1\/article-p59.xml","content-type":"text\/html","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025\/xml","content-type":"application\/xml","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025\/pdf","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2023,3,31]],"date-time":"2023-03-31T18:42:49Z","timestamp":1680288169000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/document\/doi\/10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025\/html"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,26]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,1,1]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2015,1,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1515\/cmam-2014-0025","relation":{},"ISSN":["1609-4840","1609-9389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1609-4840","type":"print"},{"value":"1609-9389","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014,9,26]]}}}
