A malicious node\ncan transmit an inaccurate message to trigger inevitable\nsituations by pretending to be multiple (other) vehicles.\nTherefore, it is critical to identify malicious nodes as well\nas fake messages generated by such nodes, and discard\nsuch messages quickly. In a Sybil attack, an attacker participates\nin the network with multiple forged identities in\norder to disrupt the fundamental operations of VANET.\nSybil attacks are particularly easy to launch in VANETs\ndue to the open and broadcast nature of communication\nmedium. In this paper, we present the implementation of\nsimulated Sybil attack scenario in VANET and its consequences\non the performance of the network. We also propose\na lightweight, scalable and distributed detection approach\nbased on the difference in movement patterns of\nSybil nodes and legitimate nodes. In our approach, each\nRoad Side Unit (RSU) computes, stores and verifies various\nparameter values including RSS, distance, angle of\npassing-by vehicles through passive overhearing process\nto detect Sybil attackers. The combination of different parameters\nmakes our detection approach highly accurate.\nWe validate our results on realistic traces obtained from\na multi-agent microscopic traffic simulator (MMTS).
