They are used to build dynamically\nreconfigurable, highly-scalable physical optical network\nlayer. As indicated by the simulation results of this\npaper, many of existing micro-mirror designs do not have\ntheir dynamic characteristics well optimized and this limits\nthe switching speed of the optical switch. In a 3DMEMS\nswitch, the coupling between the mechanical structure\n(micro-mirror) and electrostatic field (electrodes) results\nin dynamic coupled rotation of the micro-mirror about its\naxes, known as the cross-axis coupling effect.
