Smart textile employs\ncarbon fibers conductivity for measuring strains while\nmonitoring changes of electric resistance under increasing\nload. A general solution was tested in a series of calibrating\ntests on strengthening of small size concrete slabs.\nPromising results of simple specimen, has encouraged the\nresearch team to perform the next tests using mastered carbon\nfibre reinforced fabric. Main tests were performed on\nnatural scale RC beam. Smart textile proved its efficiency\nin both: strengthening and monitoring of strains during\nload increase. New strengthening proposal was given 10%\nincrease of loading capacity and the readings of strain\nchanges were similar to those obtained in classical methods.\nIn order to calibrate the prototype and to define range\nlimits of solution usability, textile sensor was tested in areas\nof large deformations (timber beam) and aswell as very\nsmall strains (bridge bearing block). In both cases, the prototype\ndemonstrated excellent performance in the range\nof importance for structural engineering.
