Some of those concepts deal with wing\nspan changes. In line with those, in a variable-span wing\nof the telescopic type, the cross-sections of the sliding panels,\nwhether be two, three or more, must be made geometrically\ncompatible among them. This requirement serves\ntwo purposes: to minimize the aerofoils\u2019 geometric discontinuity\nwhich negatively affects wing drag and lift; and\nto provide a simple structural support between any two\nsliding panels. This paper describes the methodology employed\nto develop geometrically compatible aerofoils obtained\nfrom a constant geometric offset applied to a given\ninitial aerofoil. This methodology is used to create inward\noffset aerofoils and outward offset aerofoils. The geometric\nand aerodynamic characteristics of the resulting offset\naerofoils are compared with those of the original aerofoils.\nFrom the analysis of six different original aerofoils, strong\ntrends in the geometric changes and in the aerodynamic\ncharacteristics of the resulting inward and outward offset\naerofoils are observed.
