A brief discussion of emphatic negative temporal constructions is also included. A first section deals with the definition of the location time in sentences with <jats:italic>nunca<\/jats:italic>, an interval which is often restricted, in particular by the action of tense, and of other temporal adjuncts within the same proposition (e.g., <jats:italic>nunca nessa d\u00e9cada<\/jats:italic> \u2018never in that decade\u2019, <jats:italic>nunca desde ent\u00e3o<\/jats:italic> \u2018never since then\u2019). A second section deals with the implicative combinations <jats:italic>nunca antes<\/jats:italic> and <jats:italic>nunca mais<\/jats:italic>, focusing on their semantic and pragmatic interpretation; this includes a discussion of the implicit information they normally convey, and an analysis of the intricate correspondence between tenses and semantic values involved.
