In two experiments, we assessed whether and how task demands and user age influenced task performance for a direct input device (touch screen) and an indirect input device (rotary encoder). In Experiment 1, 40 younger (18-28 years) and 40 middle-aged to older adults(51--65 years) performed tasks using controls such as sliders, up\/down buttons, list boxes, and text boxes while using a system. The optimal input device to facilitate performance was dependent on the task being performed and the age of the user. In Experiment 2, touch screen use was assessed for 20 younger (19--23 years) and 20 older adults (51--70 years). Task demands were manipulated through button size, movement distance, direction, and type of movement. Performance was moderated by the age of the user and by task demands. Actual or potential applications of this research include guidance for the optimal selection of input devices for different user populations and task characteristics.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1518\/0018720054679452","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,8,5]],"date-time":"2005-08-05T22:20:38Z","timestamp":1123280438000},"page":"271-288","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":109,"title":["Touch a Screen or Turn a Knob: Choosing the Best Device for the Job"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"47","author":[{"given":"Wendy A.","family":"Rogers","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Arthur D.","family":"Fisk","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Anne Collins","family":"McLaughlin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Richard","family":"Pak","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,6,1]]},"reference":[{"key":"atypb1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1518\/hfes.46.3.373.50396"},{"key":"atypb2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/0882-7974.16.1.110"},{"key":"atypb3","volume-title":"MIL-STD-1472D: Human engineering design criteria for military systems, equipment, and facilities","author":"Department of Defense.","year":"1989"},{"key":"atypb4","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1037\/h0055392"},{"key":"atypb5","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Friedlander, N., Schlueter, K. & Mantei, M.
