However, a number of physical and psychological environments are still deemed inappropriate for this technology. Several of the stressors creating adverse environments are considered here, in conjunction with their effects on human speech production, human performance in general, and the implications for ASR system design. We propose that a combination of continuing technological developments, together with the application of system engineering and human factors, will lead to ensuring the attainment of robust ASR performance in a number of environments previously considered as high risk. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1518\/001872096778940840","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,11,22]],"date-time":"2006-11-22T01:33:15Z","timestamp":1164159195000},"page":"142-155","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":28,"title":["Automatic Speech Recognition in Adverse Environments"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"38","author":[{"given":"Chris","family":"Baber","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England"}]},{"given":"Jan","family":"Noyes","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bristol, Bristol, England"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1996,3,1]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Effect of operator mental task loading on voice recognition system performance","year":"1981","author":"Armstrong, J.
