The objective was to analyze the influence of selection for RFIF at on carcass and performance traits by estimating various genetic parameters. Data were analyzed from five tests of feed efficiency, which were conducted with 677 Nellore males. Genetic evaluation was performed by Bayesian inference using an animal model via single- and two-trait analyses. Variables analyzed were dry matter intake, average daily gain, RFIFat, rib eye area, back fat thickness, rump fat thickness, marbling score, and subcutaneous fat thickness. The posterior mean distributions estimated at each analysis were used to estimate heritability of the traits and to perform various correlations. The studied traits showed high heritability estimates, and they should respond well to selection. The RFIFat presented a phenotypic correlation with carcass traits (which was next to zero), and there was also a negative genetic correlation. Additive genetic variability for RFIFat showed that selection for this trait can promote genetic gains in future generations, resulting in animals that are efficient in terms of nutrient use, and according to the genetic and phenotypic correlations, with no significant negative changes to carcass traits.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1590\/0103-8478cr20151505","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,12,10]],"date-time":"2016-12-10T22:46:47Z","timestamp":1481410007000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":16,"title":["Genetic analysis of residual feed intake adjusted for fat and carcass and performance traits in a Nellore herd"],"prefix":"10.1590","volume":"47","author":[{"given":"Giovanna Faria de","family":"Moraes","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Universidade Federal de Uberl\u00e2ndia, Brazil"}]},{"given":"Luiza Rodrigues Alves","family":"Abreu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil"}]},{"given":"Isabel Cristina","family":"Ferreira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Embrapa Cerrados, Brazil"}]},{"given":"Idalmo Garcia","family":"Pereira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil"}]}],"member":"530","reference":[{"key":"ref1","first-page":"03","author":"ALMEIDA R.","year":"2004"},{"issue":"8","key":"ref2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"985","DOI":"10.1071\/EA05052","article-title":"Maternal productivity of Angus cows divergently selected for post-weaning residual feed intake.","volume":"45","author":"ARTHUR P.F.","year":"2005","journal-title":"Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture"},{"issue":"11","key":"ref3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"2805","DOI":"10.2527\/2001.79112805x","article-title":"Genetic and phenotypic variance and covariance components for feed intake, feed efficiency and other postweaning traits in Angus cattle","volume":"79","author":"ARTHUR P.F.","year":"2001","journal-title":"Journal of Animal Science"},{"issue":"2","key":"ref4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"189","DOI":"10.4141\/A02-065","article-title":"Residual feed intake and body composition in young growing cattle","volume":"8","author":"BASARAB J.A.","year":"2003","journal-title":"CanadianJournal of Animal Science"},{"issue":"1","key":"ref5","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"109","DOI":"10.2527\/jas.2011-4245","article-title":"Residual intake and body weight gain: anew measure of efficiency in growing cattle.","volume":"90","author":"BERRY D.P.","year":"2012","journal-title":"Journal of Animal Science"},{"issue":"1","key":"ref6","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1","DOI":"10.1016\/j.livsci.2013.04.004","article-title":"Estimates of genetic parameters for carcass, growth and reproductive traits in Nellore cattle.","volume":"155","author":"CAETANO S.L.","year":"2013","journal-title":"Livestock Science,"},{"issue":"3","key":"ref7","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"885","DOI":"10.2527\/jas.2009-1852","article-title":"Phenotypic and genetic parameters for different measures of feed efficiency in different breeds of Irish performance-tested beef bulls","volume":"88","author":"CROWLEY J.J.","year":"2010","journal-title":"Journal of Animal Science"},{"issue":"2","key":"ref8","first-page":"302","article-title":"Metaanalysis of genetic parameter estimates of residual feed intake and of its component traits in cattle.","volume":"47","author":"DEL CLARO A.
