O presente estudo procurou compreender o efeito moderador que as pol\u00edticas educativas das escolas sobre a reten\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00eam na rela\u00e7\u00e3o entre cren\u00e7as e pr\u00e1ticas de reten\u00e7\u00e3o no 2\u00ba ano de escolaridade. Uma an\u00e1lise dos documentos orientadores de 66 escolas da Madeira, Portugal, identificou os crit\u00e9rios e requisitos exigidos para a decis\u00e3o de reten\u00e7\u00e3o. Um question\u00e1rio online recolheu as cren\u00e7as e pr\u00e1ticas de reten\u00e7\u00e3o de 300 professores desta Regi\u00e3o. Uma an\u00e1lise de perfis latentes identificou cinco grupos de professores organizados num continuum que variava entre uma maior rejei\u00e7\u00e3o e uma maior certeza nos benef\u00edcios da reten\u00e7\u00e3o. Observou-se uma associa\u00e7\u00e3o entre as cren\u00e7as e as pr\u00e1ticas dos professores apenas nas escolas que n\u00e3o tinham nem crit\u00e9rios nem requisitos definidos para a decis\u00e3o de reten\u00e7\u00e3o.
