OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi observar se o treinamento cr \u00f4nico foi capaz de produzir diferen\u00e7as sustent\u00e1veis no sangue perif\u00e9rico (SP) subpopula\u00e7\u00f5es de leuc\u00f3citos (LEU, granul\u00f3citos, mon\u00f3citos, linf\u00f3citos totais, linf\u00f3citos B e T, e c\u00e9lulas CD4+ e CD8+T e c\u00e9lulas natural killers) de atletas de caiaque de elite quando comparados com n\u00e3o atletas. M\u00c9TODOS: A amostra incluiu 13 homens atletas de caiaque de elite, 20 \u00b1 3 anos, 75,0kg \u00b1 7,9 peso e 177,3 \u00b1 7,1 cm estatura. O VO2max foi 58,3 \u00b1 7,8mL.kg.min-1. O grupo de n\u00e3o atletas incluiu sete homens saud\u00e1veis, idade 18 \u00b1 1 ano de idade, 81,3 \u00b1 13,8Kg de peso corporal e 171,9 \u00b1 4,5cm de estatura. As amostras de sangue dos atletas foram coletadas no in\u00edcio da temporada de treinamento, ap\u00f3s um per\u00edodo fora do treinamento de seis semanas. Popula\u00e7\u00f5es de c\u00e9lulas sangu\u00edneas perif\u00e9ricas foram identificadas por an\u00e1lise de citometria de fluxo. Para identificar as diferen\u00e7as entre os grupos de atletas e n\u00e3o atletas, o teste U de Mann-Whitney foi utilizado. RESULTADOS: N \u00e3o foram identificadas diferen\u00e7as entre os atletas de caiaque treinados e n\u00e3o atletas em repouso, exceto para c\u00e9lulas natural killers (CD3-CD56+) e os valores da subpopula\u00e7\u00e3o CD3-CD56+CD8+ os quais foram mais baixos nos atletas. CONCLUS\u00c3O: Nosso estudo encontrou que, ap\u00f3s um per\u00edodo prolongado sem treinamento (seis semanas), somente a popula\u00e7\u00e3o de NK CD3-CD56+ e, em especial, a subpopula\u00e7\u00e3o de altamente citot\u00f3xica CD3-CD56+CD8+ apresentou n\u00edveis mais baixos nos atletas de elite quando comparados com os homens
