As ocupa\u00e7\u00f5es tradicionais adstritas ao ensino e ao treino sofreram metamorfoses, aumentando as dificuldades de conceitualiza\u00e7\u00e3o de compet\u00eancia profissional. Neste estudo, procura-se identificar o conceito que os profissionais do desporto denotam de profissional competente, na persecu\u00e7\u00e3o da identifica\u00e7\u00e3o de um mapa conceitual transversal \u00e0s quatro \u00e1reas ocupacionais consideradas: Educa\u00e7\u00e3o F\u00edsica, Treino, Atividade F\u00edsica Adaptada e \"Fitness\". Foram entrevistados 120 profissionais (30 de cada \u00e1rea ocupacional) sobre o conceito de compet\u00eancia e de profissional competente. Na an\u00e1lise dos dados, utilizaram-se procedimentos de an\u00e1lise de conte\u00fado. Os resultados s\u00e3o ilustrativos da fr\u00e1gil conceitualiza\u00e7\u00e3o que ainda caracteriza o campo do profissional do desporto. Identificam-se, contudo, tra\u00e7os comuns que apontam para a busca de uma unidade identit\u00e1ria centrada na compet\u00eancia de conhecimento e \u00e9tica coadjuvada pela compet\u00eancia pessoal e social em estreita articula\u00e7\u00e3o com a compet\u00eancia funcional, sendo que as metacompet\u00eancias e a motiva\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00e3o fatores valorizados, os quais assumem a fun\u00e7\u00e3o de sustenta\u00e7\u00e3o da compet\u00eancia
