Artificial intelligence (AI)\nsystems promise to fight it \u2014 but at what cost? Unlike\nother machine learning applications designed to optimize\nefficiency in low-stake domains, fake news detection\noperates at the core of democratic discourse, public trust\nand epistemic integrity. This paper begins by unpacking the\ncore challenges that make fake news detection uniquely\ndemanding. In response, we argue for a shift toward\nSocially Responsible AI (SRAI) as a more appropriate\nframework for addressing these complexities. We map the\nidentified challenges onto the SRAI pyramid\u2014functional,\nlegal, ethical and philanthropic.
