This approach is rooted\nin the principles of centring the margins and highlighting\npower structures. Viewing an AI or algorithmic system as a\nwide-reaching network of social relations, including their\nimpacts on different groups and contexts, enables\nconsideration of how AI is embedded within different\ndiscourses and domains of power while emphasising the\nimpact on those most affected. The paper provides a\ndiscussion of the critical framing of the project, the\nprinciples, processes and templates for mapping AI in this\nway, and three examples of algorithmic systems in public\nsector contexts that have been discontinued, are in use now\nor are being proposed for future use. A discussion of uses\nand limitations is provided, situating the method beyond a\ndescriptive or analytical tool towards a critical approach\nto identifying locations for intervention in harmful or\nunjust uses of algorithmic systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1609\/aies.v8i1.36557","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]],"date-time":"2025-10-15T13:17:18Z","timestamp":1760534238000},"page":"391-402","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Centring the Margins: Mapping AI Systems as Systems of Power"],"prefix":"10.1609","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"Garfield","family":"Benjamin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"9382","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]]},"container-title":["Proceedings of the AAAI\/ACM Conference on AI, Ethics, and Society"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ojs.aaai.org\/index.php\/AIES\/article\/download\/36557\/38695","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/ojs.aaai.org\/index.php\/AIES\/article\/download\/36557\/38695","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]],"date-time":"2025-10-15T13:17:19Z","timestamp":1760534239000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ojs.aaai.org\/index.php\/AIES\/article\/view\/36557"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1609\/aies.v8i1.36557","relation":{},"ISSN":["3065-8365"],"issn-type":[{"value":"3065-8365","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,15]]}}}
