We conducted an\ninterview study with N=14 certified NVC trainers and a\ndiary study and co-design with N=13 lay users of online\ncommunication technologies to understand how NVC might\ninform design that centers human relationships. We define\nthree pillars of Needs-Conscious Design: Intentionality,\nPresence, and Receptiveness to Needs. Drawing on\nparticipant co-designs, we provide design concepts and\nillustrative examples for each of these pillars. We further\ndescribe a problematic emergent property of AI-mediated\ncommunication identified by participants, which we call\nEmpathy Fog, and which is characterized by uncertainty over\nhow much empathy, attention, and effort a user has actually\ninvested via an AI-facilitated online interaction. Finally,\nbecause even well-intentioned designs may alter user\nbehavior and process emotional data, we provide guiding\nquestions for consentful Needs-Conscious Design, applying an\naffirmative consent framework used in social media\ncontexts.
