                  <jats:p>With growing concern about the environmental impact of agriculture and its consequent contribution to climate change, there is an increasing interest in the implementation of agroecological approaches to achieve a more sustainable agriculture. Agroforestry is one area of research which has gained significant momentum in recent years.

Advances in temperate agroforestry reviews key recent advances in measuring and valuing how agroforestry systems promote biodiversity and deliver ecosystem services such as soil carbon sequestration. The book also considers the development of different silvopastoral and silvoarable practices, including integrating trees and livestock in timber forests, orchard and pasture systems, as well as alley cropping and intercropping.</jats:p>

                  <title>Modelling and optimising associated biodiversity in alley cropping systems</title>

                <jats:abstract xmlns:jats="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/JATS1" xml:lang="en">
                  <jats:p>The mechanisms shaping biodiversity in agroecosystems and particularly in agroforestry are difficult to understand and predict. The relation between planned biodiversity, the species chosen by the farmer, and associated biodiversity, the species that are able to adapt and thrive in agroforestry systems, is determined by diverse biological, environmental and management variables. Most studies in this area rely on case studies within specific biogeographical zones, species combinations and management options, which hampers drawing general conclusions. This chapter describes a modelling approach to compare associated biodiversity in different agroecosystems. Results show the relevance of alley cropping and intercropping to increase associated biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. The chapter also highlights the importance of further research to guide environmental managers and practitioners in applying the best policies for biodiversity conservation in agricultural landscapes.</jats:p>
