This study investigated the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of dehydroabietic acid (DHA) and its azo-functionalized derivatives against clinically relevant microorganisms. DHA exhibited potent antimicrobial activity, particularly against Staphylococcus aureus (MIC as low as 0.49 µg/mL) and significant antibiofilm effects (MBIC down to 7.81 µg/mL). Conversely, azo-functionalized derivatives showed markedly reduced efficacy across all tested parameters. Comparative analysis revealed that structural modifications compromised both antimicrobial and antibiofilm potency. Light-induced isomerization under UV and blue light did not influence significantly the activity of the tested derivatives. These findings underscore the importance of the native DHA scaffold for biological activity and highlight its potential as a lead compound for developing novel antimicrobial agents. The specific azo-functionalization approach employed herein was detrimental to efficacy, emphasizing the need for alternative strategies in designing improved derivatives based on natural bioactive compound scaffolds
[[2026,2,12
["Dehydroabietic Acid vs. Azo Derivatives: Structural Integrity as a Key to Preserving Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Potency
[[2025
Biomedical and Biopharmaceutical Research
[[2026,2,12
["Ácido Desidroabiético vs. Derivados Azo: Integridade Estrutural como Chave Para Preservar a Potência Antimicrobiana e Antibiofilme
[[2025
[[2025
["2182-2379
[[2025]]}}}
