As ports face increasing pressure to handle growing cargo volumes, reduce environmental impacts, and remain competitive, integrating digital technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence and digital twins has become critical. These technologies enable real-time data sharing, predictive maintenance and automated procedures and cargo handling, leading to faster turnaround times and better decisions. Digital platforms also facilitate collaboration among port stakeholders, including terminal operators, shipowners, logistics companies, and regulators. Despite progress in port operations, using these technologies to assess carbon emissions remains at an early stage, while challenges such as cybersecurity risks, high implementation costs, and the need for standardized protocols persist.
