There was a desire to reclaim our borders and repatriate our laws. The warnings issued by those who voted Remain were dismissed by those who voted to Leave as 'Project Fear'; but many of the consequences of Brexit that the former warned about were, in fact, realized. With its substantial majority in the 2024 general election, the Labour government under Sir Keir Starmer was in a position to bring about a closer alignment of the UK with the EU; but he had to tread warily.
