Quorum sensing enables many collaborative benefits\nsuch as synchronisation of virulence factors and biofilm formation. Both quorum sensing, as well as biofilm\nformation, encourage the development of drug resistance in micro-organisms. Biofilm formation and quorum\nsensing are causally linked to each other, playing a role in the pathogenesis of the micro-organisms. With the\nincreasing drug resistance against the available antibiotics and antifungal medications, scientists are combining\ndifferent options to develop new strategies. Such strategies rely on the inhibition of the communication and virulence\nfactors rather than on killing or inhibiting the growth of the micro-organisms. This review encompasses\nthe communication technique used by micro-organisms, how micro-organism resistance is linked to quorum\nsensing, and various chemical strategies to combat quorum sensing, thereby, drug resistance. Several compounds\nhave been identified as quorum sensing inhibitors and are known to be effective in reducing resistance\nas they do not kill the pathogens but rather disrupt their communication. Natural compounds have been identified\nas anti-quorum sensing agents. However, natural compounds have several disadvantages. Therefore, the\nneed for the development of synthetic or semi-synthetic compounds has arisen. This review argues that antiquorum\nsensing compounds are effective in disrupting quorum sensing and could, therefore be effective in reducing\nmicro-organism drug resistance.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>","DOI":"10.2174\/1381612826666201210105638","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,11]],"date-time":"2020-12-11T04:11:37Z","timestamp":1607659897000},"page":"2835-2847","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2174\/bsp_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":34,"title":["Quorum Sensing - A Stratagem for Conquering Multi-Drug Resistant Pathogens"],"prefix":"10.2174","volume":"27","author":[{"given":"Madison","family":"Tonkin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Pathology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2193, South Africa"}]},{"given":"Shama","family":"Khan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Pathology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2193, South Africa"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1838-1337","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Mohmmad Younus","family":"Wani","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Chemistry, University of Jeddah, College of Science, Jeddah, 21589, Saudi Arabia"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2845-0727","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Aijaz","family":"Ahmad","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Health Sciences, School of Pathology, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2193, South Africa"}]}],"member":"965","container-title":["Current Pharmaceutical Design"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/eurekaselect.com\/article\/download\/188976","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/www.eurekaselect.com\/188976\/article","content-type":"text\/html","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/eurekaselect.com\/article\/download\/188976","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,16]],"date-time":"2021-09-16T14:02:21Z","timestamp":1631800941000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.eurekaselect.com\/188976\/article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,15]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"25","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,15]]}},"alternative-id":["LiveAll1"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2174\/1381612826666201210105638","relation":{},"ISSN":["1381-6128"],"issn-type":[{"value":"1381-6128","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2021,9,15]]},"assertion":[{"value":"Peer Reviewed","order":0,"name":"review_status","label":"Review Status","group":{"name":"peer_review_details","label":"Peer Review Details"}},{"value":"Single blind","order":1,"name":"review_process","label":"Review Process","group":{"name":"peer_review_details","label":"Peer Review Details"}},{"value":"Checked with iThenticate","order":0,"name":"screening_status","label":"Screening Status","group":{"name":"plagiarism_screening","label":"Plagiarism Screening"}},{"value":"2020-07-05","order":0,"name":"received","label":"Received","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}},{"order":1,"name":"revised","label":"Revised","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}},{"value":"2020-10-25","order":2,"name":"accepted","label":"Accepted","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}},{"value":"2021-09-15","order":3,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
