A serine\/threonine protein\nphosphatase (PPs) activity assay was employed to monitor PPs activity. Subsequently, flow cytometry\nwas used to monitor chemokines levels in plasma samples from individuals with cognitive deficits.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title>Results:<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>Chemokines\u2019 exposure resulted only in minor cytotoxicity effects on SH-SY5Y, and in\nincreased Tau phosphorylation, particularly at the S396 residue. Tau phosphorylation correlated with\nPPs inhibition and was consistent with GSK3\u03b2 phosphorylation-mediated inhibition. Subsequent analysis\nof plasma from individuals with cognitive deficits showed that IL-8 levels were decreased.<\/jats:p>\n<\/jats:sec>\n<jats:sec>\n<jats:title>Conclusion:<\/jats:title>\n<jats:p>Data shows that both chemokines tested can exert an effect on GSK3\u03b2 phosphorylation and\nmodulate PPs activity, potentially resulting in increased Tau phosphorylation and subsequent NFTs formation.\nOne can deduce that increased chemokines stimulation during chronic inflammation can exacerbate\nthis event.
