A family <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\" xlink:href=\"S0022481200008021_inline1\" \/> \u2282 [<jats:italic>E<\/jats:italic>]<jats:sup><jats:italic>\u03c9<\/jats:italic><\/jats:sup> is said to be <jats:italic>almost disjoint<\/jats:italic> (respectively, <jats:italic>pairwise disjoint<\/jats:italic>) provided for <jats:italic>A, B<\/jats:italic> \u2208 <jats:inline-graphic xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" mime-subtype=\"gif\" xlink:type=\"simple\" xlink:href=\"S0022481200008021_inline1\" \/>, if <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> \u2260 <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> then <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> \u2229 <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> is finite (respectively, <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> \u2229 <jats:italic>B<\/jats:italic> is empty). Moreover, an infinite family <jats:italic>A<\/jats:italic> is said to be a <jats:italic>maximal almost disjoint family<\/jats:italic> provided it is an infinite almost disjoint family not properly contained in any almost disjoint family.
