This question has been investigated by Dolich, Miller and Steinhorn in the setting of ordered structures as part of their work on the property of having o-minimal open core. We answer the question in a fairly general setting and provide conditions which in practice are often easy to check. We give a further characterisation in the special case of an expansion by a generic predicate.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.2178\/jsl\/1327068694","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2012,1,20]],"date-time":"2012-01-20T14:16:13Z","timestamp":1327068973000},"page":"111-121","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":14,"title":["Expansions which introduce no new open sets"],"prefix":"10.1017","volume":"77","author":[{"given":"Gareth","family":"Boxall","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Philipp","family":"Hieronymi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"56","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,3,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref021","first-page":"763","volume":"52","author":"Pillay","year":"1987","journal-title":"First order topological structures and theories"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref010","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0168-0072(89)90061-4"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref020","first-page":"1","volume":"71","author":"Onshuus","year":"2006","journal-title":"Properties and consequences of thorn-independence"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref009","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF01171706"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref019","first-page":"193","article-title":"Expansions of the real line by open sets: o-minimality and open cores","volume":"162","author":"Miller","year":"1999","journal-title":"Fundamenta Mathematicae"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref011","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"61","DOI":"10.4064\/fm-157-1-61-78","article-title":"Densepairs of o-minimal structures","volume":"157","author":"van den Dries","year":"1998","journal-title":"Fundamenta Mathematicae"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref014","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BFb0097006"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref001","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1142\/S0219061309000811"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref008","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1090\/S0002-9947-09-04908-3"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref002","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1112\/jlms\/jdn037"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref003","first-page":"391","volume":"76","author":"Berenstein","year":"2011","journal-title":"The independence property in generalized dense pairs of structures"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref015","unstructured":"[] G\u00fcnaydin A. , Model theory of fields with multiplicative groups, Ph.D. thesis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2008."},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref004","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.apal.2007.06.002"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref005","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.apal.2009.10.004"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref007","unstructured":"[] Dolich A. , Miller C. , and Steinhorn C. , Generic expansions of ordered structures, Preprint., 2009."},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref012","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/S0024611506015747"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref013","first-page":"919","volume":"72","author":"Ealy","year":"2007","journal-title":"Characterizing rosy theories"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref016","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.4064\/fm211-1-2"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref017","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/BF02758643"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref018","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"281","DOI":"10.1201\/9781439865736-11","volume-title":"Logic Colloquium '01","volume":"20","author":"Miller","year":"2005"},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref022","unstructured":"[] Zilber B. , Complex roots of unity on the real plane, Unpublished, 2003."},{"key":"S0022481200000943_ref006","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0168-0072(98)00021-9"}],"container-title":["The Journal of Symbolic Logic"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/S0022481200000943","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2021,12,26]],"date-time":"2021-12-26T16:48:28Z","timestamp":1640537308000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/product\/identifier\/S0022481200000943\/type\/journal_article"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2012,3]]},"references-count":22,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2012,3]]}},"alternative-id":["S0022481200000943"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.2178\/jsl\/1327068694","relation":{},"ISSN":["0022-4812","1943-5886"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0022-4812","type":"print"},{"value":"1943-5886","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2012,3]]}}}
