Since hippocampal studies have\nhighlighted a differential subregional regulation along its longitudinal\naxis, a more detailed analysis addressing subregional changes along the\nlongitudinal hippocampal axis has the potential to provide new relevant\nbiomarkers. This study included structural brain MRI data of 583\nparticipants from the Alzheimer\u2019s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative\n(ADNI). Cognitively normal (CN) subjects, mild cognitively impaired\n(MCI) subjects and AD patients were conveniently selected considering\nthe age- and sex-match between clinical groups. Structural MRI\nacquisitions were pre-processed and analysed with a new longitudinal\naxis segmentation method, dividing the hippocampus in three subdivisions\n(anterior, intermediate, and posterior). When normalizing the volume of\nhippocampal sub-divisions to total hippocampus, the posterior\nhippocampus negatively correlates with age only in CN subjects (r =\n-0.31). The longitudinal ratio of hippocampal atrophy (anterior\nsub-division divided by the posterior one) shows a significant increase\nwith age only in CN (r = 0.25). Overall, in AD the posterior hippocampus\nis predominantly atrophied early on. Consequently, the\nanterior\/posterior hippocampal ratio is an AD differentiating metric at\nearly disease stages with potential for diagnostic and prognostic\napplications.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.22541\/au.171604679.95474290\/v1","type":"posted-content","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,18]],"date-time":"2024-05-18T15:40:03Z","timestamp":1716046803000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Differential atrophy along the longitudinal hippocampal axis in Alzheimer's disease"],"prefix":"10.22541","author":[{"given":"Rafaela","family":"Morais-Ribeiro","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Minho"}]},{"given":"Francisco","family":"Almeida","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Minho"}]},{"given":"Ana","family":"Coelho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Minho Life and Health Sciences Research Institute"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0509-0562","authenticated-orcid":true,"given":"Tiago","family":"Oliveira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Universidade do Minho"}]}],"member":"311","container-title":[],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,18]],"date-time":"2024-05-18T15:40:03Z","timestamp":1716046803000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.authorea.com\/users\/784486\/articles\/945514-differential-atrophy-along-the-longitudinal-hippocampal-axis-in-alzheimer-s-disease?commit=80cc653a71c771cd4b7e70f79fbe2514fc7730e6"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,18]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.22541\/au.171604679.95474290\/v1","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,18]]},"subtype":"preprint"}}
